[A]though people get paid to do their jobs, you cannot pay someone to do their job passionately and wholeheartedly. Those qualities are not for sale; they are themselves gifts that can only be given freely, and are in many, many fields.

About This Quote

Passion is a word that is very often used to describe people doing their jobs successfully. However, it seems that many people do not understand what it means to be passionate about their work. Often, the word passion is used as a synonym for enthusiasm and enthusiasm can be described as a desire to do your job and do your job well. However, zeal is a more accurate and better word to describe enthusiasm, because it has deeper meaning that passion does not.

Zeal implies that you will not rest until you complete the task that you have been assigned. The word zeal also entails a sense of purpose and of caring about what you are doing, such as caring whether others like what you are doing. If the end result is the same whether or not others like it, then there is no zeal.

A person who has zeal knows that he or she wants to do something well and wants to make the world a better place than it was before. Zeal implies real concern for others and involves an idea of having some kind of influence on them and on events in general.
